The Syrian civil war, also known as the Syrian uprising or the Syrian crisis is an ongoing armed conflict in Syria. The conflict is a battle between the military power of President Bashar al-Assad and people who want to remove this Ba’ath government. President Bashar Al-Assad has been President since June 2000 when his father Hafez al-Assad died. The conflict started in March 2011 when protests were held against the government. The Syrian conflict is not only between people in favour and against the Syrian government but is mainly about religious differences. Most of Assad’s followers (in favour) are Shia Muslims while the majority of the opposition are Sunni Muslims. Since the start of the conflict, already over four million of Syrian civilians have had to flee because of the violent battles. Additionally, the conflict has already cost the lives of around two-hundred thousands of Syrians.

This conflict is not only considered to be a very absorbing and unusual conflict because of the large number of casualties, but also because of the religious influences, large number of groups fighting each other and also several casualties from other countries like France, the UK, the USA and the Netherlands.
