At the moment in Syria, there are not only groups fighting each other which are in favour or against the
Ba'ath government. Many international organisations are also present in Syria, all with the same purpose: peace and reconstruction of Syria.
United Nations (UN)
The main goal of the UN in Syria is to achieve perpetual peace and to defend human rights. The UN set up a special programme in 2012 named the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS). This group consisted of 278 military observers (from over 40 different countries!), 81 international civilian staff and 40 local civilian staff. However, this UNSMIS was not a great succes as it already came to an end in August 2012. The UN focusses more on moving aid into Syria
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
The ICRC also plays a big role in Syria. It provides food, water, health care and other emergency relief for hundreds of thousands of Syrians who are in desperate need of help.
Doctors without Borders
Doctors without Borders is another key actor of reconstructing Syria. This charity focusses on giving emergency to people where health care is not available like doing operations, inoculating people and providing medicine. Doctors without Borders also build refugee camps for people whose houses are destroyed
More charities
Of course, dozens of other charities are present in Syria as well like UNICEF, Hand in Hand for Syria and Save the Children.
